Radio is in my blood.
I caught the "radio bug" in the summer of 1976. I was 12 years old
when I first went on the air at
WTBR-FM, the High School Radio Station
in my hometown, Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
A few years later I was the General Manager and Program Director of the station,
so with confidence I went across town to one of the local commercial radio stations,
WUPE-AM/FM ,
"Whoopee Radio" looking for a job. When I told the receptionist that I wanted to apply for a job there,
she just laughed in my face and said "Doing What?!" After she calmed down, I
explained to her that I worked at WTBR, and she let me speak with the PD, Bob Catan. He
interviewed me and sent me off to the production room to make an audition tape.
When I was almost finished, he came into the studio and asked "oh... by the
way, how old are you?" and when I told him that I was 13 he put his hands on his
forehead and said "You're too young to work here!" I soon found out that to
work legally in Massachusetts, the minimum age was 15 and I would need to get "working papers"
from the state. Well, I had no idea it was illegal for a 13
year-old to get a job. It wasn't a problem when I had a newspaper delivery
route. Besides, the FCC gave me a license when I was only 13. So there I was, puzzled and surprised,
and a little angry. He told me to come back in a few
years. So that's exactly what I did. As soon as I turned 15, I got my work
permit and went back for another interview. Bob Catan was still the PD and
immediately put me on the air in December of 1978. I worked every available
shift whenever they needed me and became Music Director in 1982. I left WUPE to
finish college and get a B.B.A. in Business Management and Organization from the
University of Miami. Since then I've been all over the country. After spending
more than 3 years working at K-BEAR Radio in Big Bear City, California, I have
moved to Elko, Nevada and I'm currently Assistant Program Director and Chief
Operator/Technical Assistant at
Ruby Radio
Corporation
